Reducing the environmental and economic impact of utilities in industrial sectors, such as the production of wood pellets and activated carbon, and simultaneously increasing productivity is possible. The introduction of edge systems computing and evolutionary control are key to building an intelligent IIoT ecosystem capable of delivering these results.

In this article the authors report a series of concrete examples of applications created from scratch or improvements obtained through the modernization of systems, to demonstrate how companies in this sector have been able to significantly reduce costs and energy consumption, increasing at the same time production efficiency, optimizing processes related to maintenance and implementing virtuous cycles to improve environmental sustainability. These efforts will stand the test of time because they are based on open, scalable and sufficiently flexible solutions that can be easily adapted to meet future challenges.
